Love Song

Songwriters Tony Memmel and Timmy Riordon

Every year my friend Timmy Riordan organizes a songwriting challenge called "The SongBomb."He asked me to be a part of it this year and I gladly accepted. The challenge is that he writes a song EVERY DAY during the month of February and asks different guest artists to also write on one day of the month. When you visit the site, check out his work and all of the other guests. It's pretty cool what people can come up with in a day!

Our songwriting-inspirational-prompt came from me, this year. I was recently told by a fan that I needed to write a "love song." It sounded like a good idea to me and here is what I came up with:

Limb Difference Coincidence

I came across a pretty awesome coincidence this week. My mom found this Children's Hospital newspaper from the Summer of 1988, in her house. She showed me the front cover and I was surprised to see my friend Ryan Haack! I officially met him in the fall of 2011. He's a major advocate for the limb and hand-difference community and runs a great blog called "Living One-Handed."

Then she opened it up and on the very next page was me at age 2! Check this out:

Dear Madison Youth Choirs,

The length of this letter is not representative of the amount of time I've been sitting here and staring at the page. I'm finding it hard to put into words the sense of accomplishment and joy that I've experienced working with you all - and also the sadness I feel that my regular time with you has come to a close.

I received a gift from you before we took the stage for the first concert. The brightly colored gift bag included a roll of Gorilla Tape (a very thoughtful and much appreciated practical gift for a one armed guitarist who uses an abnormal amount of this sturdy adhesive), a Madison Youth Choirs T-Shirt (comfortable and stylish), and a small wooden box that contained notes to me from each of the 300+ students that I had the pleasure to work with this semester. I admit that my eyes welled with tears upon receiving such a thoughtful gift. The sentimental value that that small wooden box contains is priceless to me...

It was really surreal to have so many people (students, parents, staff, directors) all committed to making a concert that featured me and my music a reality. I am so grateful to have had this opportunity. You've influenced my life in a profound way and I will cherish the music we made and our time we had together forever. It may be the corniest thing I've ever written, but I mean every word - you will be a part of every song I write for the rest of my life.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all of my new friends. Have a Merry Christmas and a wonderful new year.

Over the last few days, my apartment has turned into a CD manufacturing facility.

I decided, for my concerts with the Madison Youth Choirs this weekend (1pm., 4pm., and 7pm on Sunday at Middleton High School), to release a special edition version of my new EP "yours and mine" that includes a brand new recording of my song "America To Go." "America To Go" has been sort of a theme song for my time with MYC so I wanted to do something extra special with it.

I've been burning copies for the last 4 hours and I'm about 30% finished. I've begun to research and even salivate over devices such as the one pictured below. Imagine the sheer speed! :)

I also had to hire some employees (my wife and my mom) who have been generous enough to work on labeling, cutting, printing, and stuffing the CD cases. Their payment - homemade Tony Memmel meals and Roundy's original flavored coffee (personally, I think they're getting a good deal).

I am getting very excited for the concerts this Sunday. We'll be performing at a beautiful venue:

I know that I keep hammering away at promoting this concert but I only do that with events that are truly worthy of your time. The last few months of working with MYC have been truly great. These are can't miss concerts! Tickets will be available at the door.

I just thought I'd share this video of my song "America To Go" with you. I've been playing this song a lot lately, as it's one of the songs I'll be performing with the Madison Youth Choirs, in December.

We've been studying the lyrics and really examining the fortitude, dedication, and strength it takes to pursue a dream. Here's a little bit about where the song came from:

Upon completion on September 28th, 2010, my friend, Ashley, became the 16th female EVER to run across America. Ashley is the Founder of MS Run the US, Inc. and is the Project Organizer for the 2013 MS Run the US Relay.

MS Run the US, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) government approved charitable organization that was established to raise donations to help fund a cure for MS, as well as inspire others to get involved.

I wrote this song after being inspired by Ashley Kumlien's run across America to raise awareness and money to fight multiple sclerosis.Download the track and encourage your friends and family to do the same. Let's help Ashley reach her fund-raising goals!

Two Shows This Week

I have been friends with the Medal/Bissing family for many years. Our lives have been somewhat entwined as we grew up in the same town, went to school together, were involved in after-school-extra-curricular activities, and are members of the same church. They've been especially supportive of me and my music and have attended more of my shows than anyone I know, except for my own mom and dad.

This past May my friend, Melissa Bissing, tragically lost her son, Owen. He was only 6.5 months old. I sang at the funeral and was a first hand witness of the strength of the entire family.

Owen

Little warrior, of Sussex, was born on Nov. 10, 2010, in Waukesha, and passed away in the arms of family and friends on May 26, 2011, at Children's Hospital. He was son to Doug and Melissa Bissing, triplet brother to Weston and Logan, and little brother to Jaden. Grandson to Linda and George Medal and Pamela and David Bissing. Nephew to Rachael Medal, Jake Medal, Sherri Bissing and Eric Bissing. Great-grandson to Alice Vanden Langenberg and Lois Bissing. Great-nephew to Darleen and Ernie Tarmann.

During his short stay on Earth, Owen was a lover. His laid-back personality and smile brought joy to many. His last days were filled with warmth, family and friends. He ended his earthly journey but will live on in others. Owen's last battle gave his heart, liver and kidneys as a final offering. Owen will be missed by so many, but his story lives on.

I wrote "Owen's Song" and especially dedicate it to the Bissings and Medals. I also hope that everyone who has experienced loss can find hope and peace in the music and lyrics.

InsightAs many of you know, many of my songs are about my personal experiences with love, relationships, and family. I am glad to have many sweet songs that speak kindly of love – as I have been fortunate. I also have had my share of difficult relationships. This song is about the struggle and challenges that are a part of falling in and out of love.

I know, lyrically, that it is on the darker side of my song-spectrum but I am very excited to share the performance of this song with you. I do hope you enjoy it. It’s something that I think anyone who’s experienced love has probably felt.

Backstage Beat Boston Review

You may recall from an earlier post that when we were on tour in Boston a few weeks ago, we had a unique late-night interview with BackstageBeat Boston...

Lesleigh and I had a night off but decided to head to an open mic at a great Somerville pub/club called The Burren. We were the last to play that evening and it was pretty quiet in the room. In a strange way, it's actually a really awesome way to play. It sounds counter-intuitive BUT, on the road, sometimes it's more rewarding to play to 10 intensely listening appreciative folks than 150 shouting bar-goers. There's more opportunity to make real and strong connections. A man approached Lesleigh and said "Hey! Would you guys be willing to do an interview for BackStage Beat Boston?"

It was nearing 1am but we said that if they had the time, we had the time. So, the adventure began. We drove to one of the BBBoston reporter's homes and did a late-night concert on video and an interview. The folks we met were incredibly kind and the review of my new EP "yours and mine" was just posted the other day. The review is really well written and I think you'll really like it.

Driving

In the car again... Today Lesleigh and I are making our way home to Milwaukee. We had a really great conclusion to the tour...

The last time I wrote I was on a train out of New York. I apologize for the brevity of that entry. I was really just trying to post before the train arrived at our destination.

The last couple of days were great. We were really happy to visit my sister and brother in law in Connecticut. They recently bought their first home and it was so exciting to see them plugging into their new lives.

Our show in New Milford, CT was awesome. It was a truly fun way to conclude the performing portion of the tour. My entire family was at the show (for my Mom's birthday this year we all pitched in and booked an east coast weekend where the whole family could be together).

During the show we found out about the Brewers victory in the NLDS and performed a rousing and makeshift version of 'Take Me Out To The Ballgame.' we were happy to spread Brewers cheer in depressed Red Sox and Yankees country. We were well received, met some great new friends and had an overall splendid evening.

On Saturday we all went into New York City. We walked around and enjoyed the city, ate some great food, and hung out. In the evening we went to see ' Sister Act' on broadway. It was really fun! I especially enjoyed the hugeness of the choral numbers and the larger than life props and costumes. It's been a while since I've enjoyed the touristy bliss of New York City and my time there rejuvenated my love for the big apple!

The family parted ways on Sunday after spending a little time at 'Harvest Fest' in downtown New Milford.

Lesleigh and I decided to take a couple days of much-needed-semi-respite and we traveled to Cape Cod.

I had the best seafood I've ever eaten in my life! We just hung out, walked around, drove to Provincetown for the day (yesterday) and visited the Kennedy Estate. Vacation time is always too brief.

We woke up early and I drove the first 6 hours of our drive. We're well into hour 8 now with a final destination of Elyria, OH. We chose Elyria because there is a Mexican restaurant close to the hotel and I'm sure we'll be hungry and thirsty by this evening.

Boston and New York

I've been a bit behind on my blogging. This tour has been moving at a more rapid pace than any of my previous journeys. It's been exciting to witness the growth of interest (in our music) and reception in these cities and towns.

This is our 6th tour and I've been going nonstop for weeks. Our first 'day off' was Tuesday. It was a rainy day in Boston and we spent the morning working from our hotel. In the afternoon we drove into the north end which is a beautiful/historically significant area. We were fortunate to meet up with some friends for a wonderful Italian dinner. I had linguine in a white wine sauce with mussels. It was time to splurge as i was unsure if i could even look at another peanut butter sandwich! I wish I had it in front of me now as I am salivating just writing about it and borderline starving.

Later that evening we went to an open mic and just hung out. It was great catching up with our Boston friends. I miss Boston when we leave. Can't wait to go back.

At the open mic, a guy approached us and asked us if we'd be willing to do an interview for Backstage Beat Boston. So, at 1:00am we went and did an interview and played a small concert for a journalist. It was one of the coolest experiences we've had. Definitely an adventure!

I'm on a train right now from New York City to New Jersey. We just finished our show with Stephie Coplan & the Pedestrians (who are awesome by the way). We had a great time... It's always special to play in New York.

Tomorrow we're headed to Connecticut for our final show on the east coast. My sister and brother in law recently moved there and we're excited to see them and our nephew cats.

I'm an emotional melting pot. I'm pretty exhausted but the road really keeps me going. I always miss traveling and making music on the road when I'm back at home. They're both awesome but two totally different ballgames.

Ithaca, Connecticut and Cornwall on Hudson

It's always great when you arrive in a brand new town and you see the venue you're playing at displaying signage in support of your gig!

We've been working VERY hard and there's much to tell! We are very excited about being named Critic's Picks in the Boston Globe this week. Tomorrow is our first day in Boston and we're anxious to get there.

Two nights ago we played in Ithaca, NY. We were fortunate to share the stage with a local band and had a great night. Our new friend Sarah (the other Adam Duritz cover contest winner) brought some friends and the room was comfortably full with an awesome listening crowd! Ithaca was a cool town and I wish that we could have stayed a little longer.

We drove a few hours after the show to get a jump on a longer jaunt. We couldn't help but notice that Scranton, PA (where the show 'The Office' takes place) was sort of on the way. We stayed in a bizarre hotel and were surprised in the morning at how beautifully mountainous the whole area was! Unfortunately we were on a tight schedule and couldn't stay too long.

Yesterday we played a show in Higganum, CT. A small town a few miles from the Atlantic coast. We played a Farmers Market and had a blast. We met this amazing lady named 'Deb' who gave us a detailed history of the area and took us out for pizza. She was so sweet and generous! So were the other vendors. A big thanks to Higganum! We hope to see you soon!

Today we drove to Cornwall on Hudson and spent most of the day doing computer work. The weather got much cooler today So, a warm cup of coffee and a few hours catching up on correspondence was really nice.

We've been eating a lot of peanut butter sandwiches but we decided to splurge a bit tonight and we had a nice dinner. We had these amazing white wine steamed mussels. Fabulous.

Our show tonight started a little slowly but ended up being great. A bunch of folks picked up our new EP and we had a fun evening.

Now, Les is taking a turn driving so that I can blog. We're driving part way and staying in central CT tonight.

Michigan, Ohio, New York

First things first, take a good look at the building in this picture. I'm glad Lesleigh was able to get a pic of it! Finally a one stop shop for firework AND karate enthusiasts.

We're currently driving through upstate New York and it is gorgeous. I love going on tour in the fall as the colors are an added bonus.

Tuesday we played our first show of the tour in Royal Oak, MI. My friend Molly Ryan Stapelman (who runs the 'Lucky Fin Project' -support group for individuals who have limb differences and their families) Lives there. It was great to meet her in person and to enjoy dinner with her lovely family.

Our show was at Oak City Grille. It was a really cool place with an open air vibe and an amazing stage which was perched above the bar and overlooked the entire venue. The show went awesomely and I owe a huge public thanks to Molly for helping me to set it up and get the word out! The people in Royal Oak were really sweet and generous and I am happy to say that we left many albums and t-shirts behind with new friends and fans!

The release of the new EP has been stunning. In the first few hours after I posted that it was available at www.tonymemmel.bandcamp.com it received close to 400 plays! Thanks so much. Last night we played as featured guests at Sonnets Coffee House in Wadsworth, OH. It's an awesome 'main street USA' kind of town and we loved it. Thanks to the fabulous musicians who were so complimentary of our music and who performed their own music! You guys are great.

My friend James (from High School - back in good ol' Waukesha, WI) called me yesterday and said he was just 15 miles from where we were playing. He's a touring musician himself and so he came and played at the showcase as well. It was really fun to see an old friend on the road. I wish him luck as he continues east.

Today we're driving to our show in Ithaca, NY. As you may remember, Lesleigh won an album artwork contest earlier this year. Her album design was chosen by Adam Duritz of the Counting Crows for his solo acoustic EP he released. He chose 2 covers out of 1,500 submissions! The other winner is a student at Cornell and has helped us extensively with promoting our show tonight! We're excited to meet her and hope for a Counting Crows sighting :)

Brand New Music Released

about this album:

At the end of August 2011, I decided to take a risk and invest in my own home recording studio. I spent September buried in tracking, mixing, and mastering books and learning the ins and out of the equipment I’d purchased.

I had a collection of songs that I was working on and was really loving but couldn’t find a fitting place for them in my future recording and full-length album plans. “Yours and Mine” is the result.

This is the first collection of recordings that I’ve ever done on my own. They were recorded in my apartment, in Wauwatosa, WI, with three microphones and a computer. I truly hope that you enjoy the result.

Madison Youth Choirs, Fall Tour, & New Music

I've just checked into my hotel for the evening and I've been looking forward to blogging today as there is much to talk about...

I had a really hectic day and was somewhat frazzled as Lesleigh and I are leaving Milwaukee for 3 weeks on the road and I'm way behind in my packing and preparations. Thankfully, things are starting to come together and I'd been looking forward to tonight for quite some time.

I spent the evening with the Madison Youth Choirs. As you may remember from earlier blogs, I am an artist in residency with MYC this fall and I'm working closely with the staff and students toward a series of concerts that will feature arrangements of my songs, sung by the choirs and me, on December 18th (I definitely recommend getting some tickets and coming to this show - It's shaping up to be a very special event). We had our first rehearsal tonight since our first meeting at the choir retreat in August and it was tremendous.

It was a real honor for me to spend time with the students and have them analyzing and studying my songs. I love talking about music, lyrics, and about what artists were thinking when they wrote certain songs - So, you can imagine it's pretty incredible to hear your work come to life with 100 voices after a thorough discussion.

If any MYC folks are reading, I really enjoyed meeting with all of the groups and conversing with you all tonight. I can't wait to see the groups I worked with tonight again in a few weeks AND I'm really looking forward to rehearsals with the rest of the students tomorrow evening.

Monday night or very early Tuesday morning Lesleigh and I are leaving for our first stop of the tour in Michigan. As always, I'll be blogging from the road!

Good evening! I hope you're having a great beginning to your week. It may sound corny, but as a lifelong Green Bay Packers fan, a win on Sunday always sets my spirits high as I jump into a new week. Lately it has been one busy week followed by the next. I am not complaining as it has taken me several years of work to get me to a point where I am constantly very busy.

Artist in Residence

Every once in a while something comes into your life which is truly unexpected and awesome...

This past December, I attended Milwaukee's famous production of "A Christmas Carol." The play runs during the holiday season each year and was extra special in 2010 because I knew two members of the cast. My high-school music teacher, and friend, Margaret Jenks's sons each had a role in the play and they were both magnificent in their roles!

I took my wife, Lesleigh, to the performance and after the show, we were in conversation with Margaret, and another more recent friend of mine, Randy Swiggum. As we got to talking Randy asked me if I'd have interest in working with the Madison Youth Choirs organization sometime in the future. Randy and Margaret are both directors with MYC and he explained that he thought it could be a great experience for the kids to work with me over the course of a semester and to get to know about the process and work that goes into songwriting, my efforts in learning guitar (though I was born missing my left forearm), and just overall spending time and socializing with the youth and answering questions as they came up. The idea sounded really cool. I'd had the opportunity to work in an educational setting in smaller and less involved capacities but this would be new territory. I told them 'yes.'

Over the past nine months I've corresponded with the directors of MYC via email and had meetings to discuss repertoire, arrangements, teaching, students, music, etc. On a sidenote, all parents and children who are involved in MYC, it has been truly inspiring for me to observe and to be a part of curriculum building and the educational process - and the fall season is only just beginning! The directors at MYC really love music and teaching and it was very apparent from the get-go. (And, no, they did not ask me to write that).

We just completed our first encounter at a choir retreat last weekend. Over the course of two days I met many of the 300+ students and spent time in lessons, playing soccer with the kids, and making music together.

Two of the most inspiring moments for me in my career as an independent musician occurred at camp. At the conclusion of each day the entire group collected into the auditorium and I quickly taught the students my song 'America To Go' (I wrote this song after being inspired by Ashley Kumlien’s run across America to raise awareness and money to fight multiple sclerosis.)

Hearing all of their voices singing a song that I'd written was a career highlight for me. I'm very excited to continue through the fall semester with regular visits to Madison and to work with MYC toward our concerts this December!

FURTHERMORE, I've recently been commissioned as an 'Artist In Residence' with the Madison Youth Choirs for the fall of 2011. Several of my songs are being arranged into choral works for a concert in December. I'm very much looking forward to working with the Madison Youth Choirs this weekend and through the fall!

Revamping My Blog

Good morning, I hope you're having a great weekend so far. I've been thinking over some changes to my blog for a while and when I woke up this morning I decided it was time to implement them.

My blog to date has been almost exclusively dedicated to my adventures in travel. I have traveled pretty extensively over the last 2.5 years, in support of my music. My only problem with my blog being focused almost exclusively on touring is that I tour about 5-8 weeks a year. BUT, there is quite a lot that goes on behind the scenes on any given day.

When I am traveling I will continue to write about my endeavors. When I am not traveling I'll be writing about:

Life as an independent musician and business owner, things that challenge me, things that inspire me, day-to-day struggles and joys, and more.

As always, and more than ever, I welcome your comments and feedback. I look forward to being a lot more active in the blogging world and sharing what I'm learning and accomplishing with you.

Jeff Tweedy

My wife, Lesleigh, had been talking for weeks about a surprise that she was planning for us. I've been putting in exceptionally long days and she's been very busy balancing her nursing career, band career, and home-life. We've been talking a lot lately about taking a small vacation or planning an overnight getaway.

To my surprise, she told me on Thursday that I should pack my swimsuit and an overnight bag because we had plans for Friday night. She ended up taking us to Door County, WI (a popular vacation destination in WI) and we spent the afternoon swimming in the hotel pool and just relaxing. She then said that the REAL surprise was yet to come...

She had planned a dinner at a microbrewery called 'Shipwrecked' where we both had a couple of beers and an awesome meal. While we were at the dinner table she handed me an envelope that had a note and a 2nd envelope inside which revealed 2 TICKETS TO SEE JEFF TWEEDY(of Wilco and Uncle Tupelo) SOLO ACOUSTIC that night!

Jeff Tweedy is one of my all time favorite musicians. His songwriting and musicianship are incredible. I'd seen live footage online and in documentaries but never experienced the actual live show. So you can imagine how thrilled I was to be receiving two tickets to a small (I think 750 seat) venue for a once in a lifetime concert experience.

The show exceeded my excited/high expectations. You could hear a pin drop while he was performing songs from his entire 20+ year catalog. Lesleigh and I looked at each other with amazement at more than one point during the show. All of my senses were heightened.

As of late, I've been spending a lot of time at festivals and hearing music in bars. It was really a treat to hear an expert of the songwriting craft and to really appreciate the intricacy of the songsmith on stage. The audience shared our enthusiasm and enjoyed Tweedy's in-between-songs humor and conversation.

It was one of the best concerts I've ever been to. I have an amazing and thoughtful wife. I'm glad to say that she enjoyed it as much as I did. Thank you, Lesleigh, what an awesome overnight vacation. I'll never forget it.

Philadelphia to NYC

I'm sitting in a coffee shop underneath a train station in South Orange, NJ. I have an Earl Grey Tea in my hand (actually on the table - as I only have one hand and am using it to type at the moment) and am enjoying my time in the northeast!

Our day in Philadelphia was a blast. My sister, brother in law, Lesleigh, and I spent hours just strolling around the city. I, being our group's main American History advocate, truly hoped to score some tickets to an Independence Hall tour. They're hard to come by on the weekends and I've taken the tour 3 times in the last year and a half, BUT they are free and it is an awesome stop and one I don't mind re-enforcing!

We walked to the visitor center and learned that all of the day's tickets had been distributed. Disappointed, we began to exit the building, but as we were departing, a park ranger called us back and gave us four tickets that had been unclaimed for the tour starting 15 minutes from then. PERFECT TIMING!

The tour was awesome and was the best one I've been on. The park ranger was very knowledgeable and we all agreed it was pretty sweet.

We then pressed on and viewed the old neighborhoods, waterfront, South Street, the LOVE statue, and the 'Rocky Steps' at the Philadelphia art museum. MILES of walking.

Sunday we visited Valley Forge and enjoyed a stroll through the park. It is also free if you just walk around. ALSO, there were Revolutionary War re-enactors there which was especially awesome as they demonstrated the firing of replica 18th century muskets.... Oh yeah!

Sadly we had to leave the Philly area but New York is a great next stop if you have to leave. Monday night we played at the Sidewalk Cafe Open Mic which had been temporarily relocated to a 2nd floor walk-up on the Lower East side due to renovations at the cafe. It was one of the mostinteresting open mics I've ever been to. There was an insanely eclectic mix of songwriters, poets, and storytellers all crammed into small and warm space. It was really cool and a very unique experience for us. We feel we did very well and were happy to meet some new friends.

Before the gig, AJ (a great friend of mine whose residence we are staying at while in the NYC area), Lesleigh, and I were just walking around the city and enjoying the sites, when we were approached by a guy who worked for the Late Show with Daviid Letterman. He was offering free tickets to the next day's show if you could answer a trivia question about the show. We succeeded and earned our way on...

WE WERE EXCEPTIONALLY THRILLED as one of our favorite bands, the Foo Fighters, AND one of our favorite comedians, Ricky Gervais, were slated to be the guests.

The show was awesome!!! We had a total blast and enjoyed catching the show on TV later at night. It was really fun and there was a cool energy about the whole thing. If you DVR'd or as I did 'taped' the show, you can look closely in the far back right hand corner of your screen you can see a congenital amputee with his 'hands' in the air. That's where we were :) (It's actually very difficult to see. I'm being mildly facetious but the trained eye and paused screen might reveal our position.)

AJ had a meeting and had to depart but Les and I stayed in the city... I had really hoped to get just a little closer to the show and to the acts so we then waited around in the rain and wind AND thunderstorms and were able to meet 2 Foo Fighters (Nate and Pat) and a few people that work on the show. Everyone was very gracious and we enjoyed the opportunity to chat.

NOW, we are making up our minds about what to do today... But first, lunch :) Have a good day!

On The Train To Philadelphia

I'm writing today on the train to Philadelphia. When I was here on my fall tour, my sister, brother-in-law, and I had the opportunity to enjoy a lengthy stroll on a beautiful day in the city.

I love Philadelphia and today is extra special because Lesleigh is here!!! It's been a great/busy week and we are both ready to enjoy some exploration time.

The city is very walkable and everywhere you turn has a historical significance. It's right up my alley.

ALSO, Our show last night was a lot of fun. We had the privilege of sharing the stage with PJ Pacifico and Bess Rogers. Both of which are great singer-songwriters and truly kind people. It's always great to meet some new friends out on the road. I look forward to seeing them again, in the future...

Today I am truly happy. We are living out one of my "favorite day scenarios"... Wake up early, catch a train into the city, walk, explore, eat, have a beer or two with friends. This is the kind of day I live for.

D.C. Continued...

Tuesday was a beautiful day. The temperature rose into the 80's and Lesleigh and I spent the entire day walking around Washington, D.C. We walked... and walked... and walked. Our feet hurt, our legs hurt, and we were incredibly hungry BUT man it was an awesome day.

We began our day at Arlington National Cemetery which was a really moving experience. The graves are aligned perfectly in rows with manicured trees and lawns and a beautiful view overlooking the river and the National Mall. I found The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, JFK and RFK's graves especially moving. The crowds really flock to the JFK site and we had to wait in a line to get to see it. It's really something... A simple design and an eternal flame.

We then walked around The Lincoln Memorial, The Vietnam War Memorial, The Korean War Memorial and the World War II Memorial. I found the Lincoln Memorial especially cool. It's something you see on TV and in movies all of the time and it's been the backdrop for major social and political movements. It's stunning and large and a wonderful testimonial to an amazing individual.

The war memorials are also incredibly moving. As a teenager I saw a traveling version of the Vietnam wall that made it's way to Waukesha. As I recall it was scaled down yet, very moving. I have to report that the real wall in D.C. is breathtaking. It's so big which is sad because the names of thousands and thousands of soldiers are etched into the wall. It's quite a sight.

Wednesday was a little less favorable as far as the weather goes. It was rainy and cool and not a pleasant day for outdoor exploration. This was not a problem as we had a lot of administrative work to do and also had an afternoon performance booked at the VA hospital. It took on special meaning considering the history of the city and our previous day's visit to Arlington and the war memorials.

The VA was a really cool experience. We were well received and feel the veterans enjoyed our music. It was definitely a mutually agreeable situation as I had been looking forward to that stop with a particular excitement/importance. I was anxious to give a little time and to share my music with some folks who have given much of themselves for us in one way or another. We look forward to returning, in the future.

Since the National Cherry Blossom Festival is in full swing, the museums are open late. We decided to visit the Smithsonian museum of Natural History. I especially enjoyed the dinosaur exhibit (sidenote: I'm a lifetime quasi-dinosaur-nerd. i.e. one of my favorite dinosaurs is the pachycephalosaurus). The ocean exhibit and gem exhibit are also really cool. Lesleigh had really been looking forward to showing me the Hope Diamond as it was a particularly good memory from her from her previous visit to D.C.

Wednesday we spent much of the day walking around the Tidal Basin (one of the hot-spots of the Cherry Blossom festival) as well as the Jefferson Memorial, and the FDR memorial. It's cool that there are so many monuments and each one is different than the next. It really adds to the unique charm of the city. We found the FDR memorial to be really unique as it outlines his terms in office with a series of statues, waterfalls, and quotes.

In the evening, we went to the Iota Club and played at the open mic there. We met some really nice new friends and we're looking forward to returning to this awesome club for live music. Definitely check it out if you're in the area!

NOW, we are in Philadelphia. It's been good to see my sister and brother-in-law. We have a show tonight at Burlap and Bean and we're very excited to play. It's a great listening room and should be a really fun night.

Washington D.C. - Day 1

Washington D.C. is a place that I've looked forward to visiting my entire life. I've always known that the museums, monuments, and unparalleled history would be a life-changing experience. So, when the opportunity arose to route our tour through the nation's capitol, I jumped at the chance.

We are back at our hotel after an EXTREME day of walking in D.C. We hit the town hard!!! Lesleigh and I spent seven hours walking through the Smithsonian Museum of American History. It is unbelieveable (Perhaps what's even harder to believe is that it's only one of MANY museums you can walk through). The first exhibit we saw was the actual flag that inspired the National Anthem. It's one of the most moving artifacts I've ever seen. The presentation is stunning and it really made me speechless. No photos allowed, so you'll just have to come to the city and see it for yourself. It's so worth it.

We proceeded to walk through the presidential exhibit. Within 20 minutes of our visit I'd only passed through one small portion of the large display prompting Lesleigh to delicately suggest that though there is an urge to linger on every word, campaign button, and pair of presidential slippers, that there is SO much to see. Lesleigh is a "Washington D.C. tourist veteran" and seems to have a good idea of what it will take to see as much of the city as we intend to! Iliterally could have spent two or three days there. The highlights for me were the History of American Warfare exhibit and the presidential exhibit (which included one of Abraham Lincoln's suits and his top hat).

While there was still some daylight, Lesleigh and I walked around the National Mall which is full of opportunities for snapshots and reflection time. It's hard for me to peel myself away from the sites- I don't get to see The White House, U.S. Capitol, and Washington Monument every day!

Tonight we were walking through the streets and were dying for some familiar cuisine so we had a beer and dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe - next door to the Ford's Theater. Lesleigh and I had some great conversation today and we're feeling especially grateful as she would normally be returning to work tomorrow!

I'm excited for another day of exploration tomorrow. We're hoping the weather holds out and provides us with favorable conditions as we have a large list of places to see!

Nashville, Atlanta, Charleston, Raleigh, arriving in D.C.

Things have been hectic out here on the road! It's hard to believe but I am about to begin week four of this large tour that I've been working on assembling since December! Things have been going great at times and things have been challenging at other times. Lesleigh rejoined the tour on Monday, in Atlanta! It was an emotional and joyous reunion. I'm so glad she's back! Everything is better when she is here.

NASHVILLE TO ATLANTA I had A beautiful drive from Nashville to Atlanta (still by myself at the time). The southeastern U.S. is a gorgeous region. There were beautiful mountains and streams and all of the plantlife was blooming and flowering. I loved it. My only problem has been the introduction of a few car problems. I've been watching my gauges and the feel of the vehicle especially closely since Nashville. It's running well now but the hills, beautiful as they are, caused some vehicular challenges.

We played at an open mic challenge in Decatur, GA on Monday. The competition was incredible. Lesleigh and I were honored to finish in the top 3!!!! We look forward to returning there again soon. It was really cool because we made some great new friends and also were very grateful to see a number of friends at the show from our past. Thank you for your support!

Tuesday we made it to Charleston which is one of the coolest cities I've ever visited. We stayed with my aunt and uncle and enjoyed a "feeling of home" for a couple of days. They took us out for dinner at the best seafood restaurant I've ever eaten at. It was nestled off the beaten path, on a dirt road, and had a beautiful view of the waterways and wetlands. Food served on paper plates, cold beer, great company... It was a welcome change of pace.

Wednesday it stormed... This did not stop Lesleigh and I. Minutes after we parked the car, the rains began. They didn't stop all day. It was actually very fun. It was relatively warm and the winds were minimal, so our newly purchased umbrellas from Walgreen's did the trick (for the most part). The storms kept the crowds down and our visit was pleasant and quiet. MUCH of the downtown area is architecturally designed to make the city seem preserved in the 18th century. There are some streets that if modern vehicles weren't parked along the roadside you'd never know you were in the 21st century!

Thursday, on our way out of town, we made a stop at Cypress Gardens - a former southern plantation. We chose it because it was along the way and didn't really know what to expect. It was really a neat and peaceful stop. It wasn't what we had expected. It was the grounds of a former rice plantation and is now a wildlife sanctuary. The swampy landscape was full of natural beauty and local wildlife. We really enjoyed this unplanned stop...

RALEIGH- We departed Charleston on Thursday morning and drove to Raleigh where we stayed with Lesleigh's family. Again, it poured all day and we were glad to arrive at our destination. We were greeted very warmly and ended up having an AWESOME homemade feast, a little wine, a concert for our hosts, and some good conversation. It was a welcome change of pace.

We ended up finding a gig opportunity at the last minute and played to a full room at Mac's Tavern last night. Lesleigh and I had a blast and are grateful to everyone who had a hand in helping us make that happen!

WASHINGTON D.C. - We just arrived in DC this evening... Lesleigh and I have been mapping out our visit. This is one of my most highly anticipated stops on this tour! I've never been here and I can hardly wait until morning. We have a very full schedule over the few days including our highly anticipated afternoon of playing music at the VA hospital on Tuesday.

The Volunteer State

The thunderstorms that have been in the weather forecasts just arrived here in Nashville, TN. I'm sitting in my hotel room at the Econo Lodge and drying my rain-soaked blue jeans and shoes by the heater in the room. I thought it would be a good time to bring you up to speed.

As you know from my previous blog, I arrived in Memphis, TN on Wednesday afternoon and did some exploring through the evening. Thursday I woke up and had to check out of my motel as there had only been availability for one night at the Inn. I was surprised when I opened my door in shorts and a t-shirt that the weather had dropped about 30 degrees overnight (no exaggeration from the 80's to the 50's). I grabbed my sweatshirt from my suitcase and hit the town.

My time was limited as I had a show in the evening and just a few hours to explore before I had to check in at my new motel and make my way to the gig. A must-see for me while in Memphis was Sun Studios ("the birthplace of rock n'roll"). This is a really cool tour if you're ever travelling to/passing through the city. Sun Studios launched the careers of Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Johnny Cash! It was SO awesome. A relatively undisturbed historical space that is largely intact from the era of the aforementioned greats. Many contemporary artists have also worked there including U2 and John Mellencamp. I was pretty much in heaven... I caught lunch after the tour at Jim Neely's Interstate BBQ. I had a VERY good sandwich at the world famous diner.

My gig that night went well. I played at a local spot called Java Cabana in the Cooper-Young neighborhood. It was a cool area and a great spot for a show. I met some new friends and got to hang out with them for a bit. One new friend and I went out for a brew after the show and caught the sets of some great local hip-hop artists at a nearby bar/club. There is live music everywhere in Memphis.

Yesterday I woke up and drove to Graceland. Tickets are like $35... That was a bit out of my price range especially since I had to drive to Nashville and didn't have much time to enjoy it. At least I got to see it from the road. I'll have to stop there next time...

NASHVILLE is really awesome! It has the feel of being a big city and small city all at once. I didn't book a formal gig but definitely wanted to hit an open mic or two and meet some new people while in town - which is what touring is all about. Through my searching, I found that the Commodore Grille has a songwriter showcase, with an open mic to follow, nightly.

There were some really talented people there. One man that played in the showcase had been a guitarist in the country star Toby Keith's band. One woman played a song she wrote that had been recorded by LeAnn Womack (This is a big country/songwriter scene). People joke that everyone in Nashville is a singer or songwriter which isn't that far from the truth. I'm glad to report that I was really pleased with my performance and felt that I was very well received. The host of the show invited me back tonight so that is where I'm headed shortly.

My day got off to a great start today as I had coffee this morning with an old friend of mine who's lived in Tennessee for years, now. We caught up for quite a while and I really enjoyed picking up right where we left off and hanging out for a bit. It was nice to see a familiar face.

Tomorrow morning I'm taking a tour of the Grand Ole Opry. After that I'm looking forward to an anticipated beautiful drive to Atlanta where LESLEIGH WILL BE REJOINING THE TOUR :) :) :) I've really missed her and I can't wait to see her on Monday.

Houston to New Orleans to Memphis...

Though you could spend an extensive amount of time in any of the cities mentioned in the title of this blog, as a touring musician you are bound to the commitment to press onward to the next city - even if you'd like to stay a little longer. My problem is that I tend to fall in love with just about every place I visit, therefore moving on is a challenge.

My day in Houston was really enjoyable. I have always had an interest in the history of America's space program. Films such as 'Apollo 13' and 'October Sky' fueled an early interest in astronauts and space. I do not claim to be an expert but I do enjoy learning about this subject matter. That being said, the Johnson Space Center was a must-see for me. (tip: If you plan to go, shop online for your tickets in advance as they are half the cost of regular admission).

On display in the museum are actual moon rocks, films about aeronautics and space exploration, and other artifacts/memorabilia. The highlight of my day was the tram tour of the grounds. I enjoyed seeing a Saturn V rocket up-close (SO HUGE) and driving around near mission control and observing the training of astronauts.

My show that evening was fun. I played for an intimate crowd at the 'Coffee Oasis' and made a few new friends. One of which is an art student at a local university and gifted me a charcoal sketch that she'd drawn of me during my set. Thanks again, Kasey!

Onto NEW ORLEANS... Some of you may remember that Lesleigh and I traveled to New Orleans last February as part of a mission trip for hurricane Katrina relief. I'm happy to report that it looked noticeably better this year but there is still a long way to go. The culture there is so... fun. It's hard to think of a better word.

I played the early set at Neutral Ground Coffee House, in the evening... The booking manager told me that he really enjoyed my set and looked forward to my return. I always think that is very cool... Being a musician you are constantly giving first impressions of yourself to potential fans, friends, venue owners, etc. It's always rewarding to make a good impression and to be asked to come again. New Orleans is such a cool place. I will definitely be back!

After my show I walked around on Bourbon St. and in the French Quarter. Having only eaten a peanut butter sandwich, some cheese nips and a bowl of cereal, by 10pm I was on my way to starving. I had hoped for some authentic cajun quisine but beggars can't be choosers late at night. I found an Italian place called 'Angeli's' and enjoyed a cold beer and a GREAT authentic Italian pizza. It really hit the spot and beat the alternative of eating my shoe (I'm only half kidding... I was pretty hungry) :)

Today I made my way to Memphis. The drive took me just over 6 hours and it was really enjoyable and went rather quickly. It's my first time in Memphis and I have a night off to boot! Tomorrow I play at Java Cabana Coffeehouse from 7:30pm-8:30pm. I'm really looking forward to it. I also intend to see Sun Studios and Graceland.

Tonight I just walked around on Beale St. downtown and ate an AWESOME BBQ dinner. I chose the restaurant because it had all kinds of newspaper and magazine articles posted on the window hailing it as "One of the top 3 BBQ joints in the world!" In my opinion, they weren't kidding. I can't help but think that Lesleigh would really love it here... I'm anxious to share this city with her on a future tour.

Special Day In Dallas and onto Houston

Saturday morning Lesleigh and I woke up and made our way to Grapevine, TX for a very special performance... We were fortunate to be able to coordinate a private concert/'meet and greet' for children and families in the "Hands Down Support Group" - a parent-run organization providing support to families of children with hand differences. The group originated at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital and is made up primarily of families whose children are patients of Scottish Rite. It was such an AWESOME afternoon! I very much enjoyed sharing our music, and the story of how I learned to play guitar as an amputee. We were able to meet all kinds of new people and I fielded questions for several hours about my life so far. It's a day that will stick with me forever. I look forward to returning to Dallas as soon as possible!

The time flew by and after a wonderful (and late) lunch Lesleigh and I departed for Houston. It was such a beautiful evening. The Texas countryside is vast and there are scattered ranches, plains, and grasslands as far as the eye can see. We had the windows down and enjoyed the warm breezes as we drove.

Unfortunately Lesleigh had to depart this morning for Milwaukee as she has to return to her regular job as a nurse tomorrow. We've had to separate like this several times now and I tell you it hasn't gotten much easier!!! What's pulling me through is the excitement of her return to the tour next week! We're truly best friends... I can't wait to see her again.

I checked into a hotel this evening just outside of Houston. After a relaxing evening swim, I ate some dinner and just got off of the phone with Lesleigh (she's arrived safely in Milwaukee). I have a show tomorrow evening at Coffee Oasis in Seabrook, TX which is only several minutes from the Johnson Space Center where I intend to spend my day. I'm excited to have a busy day tomorrow and to visit NASA's mission control center! I have a feeling it's going to be pretty awesome!

BIG NEWS in Dallas!

Another gorgeous day here in Dallas and SO MUCH has happened.

Lesleigh and I just completed our first stop of the tour. This afternoon, we played for children and families at Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in Dallas, TX. It was such a rewarding experience to get to talk with the families and meet some of the children that are patients or members of support groups through the hospital. Tomorrow, I'll be playing for the "Hands Down" support group which is affiliated with the hospital. This group specifically serves families who have children with limb differences.

One of my favorite things about what I do is that I get to share my music and my story with so many different people. Today was extra special: front and center, there were 3 young girls with limb differences. I felt so awesome to be there playing my music and showing them first-hand that they can do whatever they set their minds to, as well.

Just wanted to share this with you: one of the kids knew that I was going to be playing at the hospital today, and she colored a picture for me. It really brightened my day. Thanks, Abby!

WE HAVE A BIG ANNOUNCEMENT!!

Moving back in time... yesterday was St. Patrick's Day. I did, indeed, feel that the luck of the Irish was present in Dallas. A few weeks ago, Lesleigh came across an album artwork competition for one of my all-time favorite artists: Adam Duritz of the Counting Crows. He is releasing a solo project, and called upon his fans to design the album artwork. Lesleigh jumped at the chance, and we put together a submission. After being narrowed down from 1,400 to 25, then to the final 5, Adam Duritz chose Lesleigh's artwork for one of the two covers for his new album! I have a huge smile on my face right now as I'm writing this. I am so excited and so proud, and happy to have helped her work on the project. I'll keep you posted if more details come through. We are loving every minute here in Dallas. Sunshine is beaming into our room. Consistent 80-degree weather is a welcome change of pace. Yesterday, Lesleigh and I dined on some delicious Mexican cuisine and enjoyed one green beer until they ran out of food coloring at 8pm. (Bizarre side note: for the same beer, without green food coloring, the price raised $1 per drink...)

Yesterday, we also went and explored downtown Dallas. A personal must-see on this tour for me was the John F. Kennedy assassination site, which was truly chilling and somber, but a really important stop.

Tonight, Lesleigh and I are going to get some BBQ and celebrate the success of the album artwork and an enjoyable and memorable day at Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. I hope you're doing well, wherever this blog may find you. I will write more in the days to come.

'98 GMC Jimmy = Our Hidalgo

It was 39 degrees this morning when Lesleigh and I left St. Louis, MO bound for Dallas, TX. We departed at 9:30 this morning and arrived in Dallas, TX this evening at 9:15pm! It's 72 degrees!

After a long day of driving it was nice to arrive and stretch our legs a bit. We're both really enjoying Texas so far. We just arrived back at our hotel after enjoying a delicious appetizer and drink at a local restaurant. My first impression would indicate that Dallas would be a food-lover's paradise. I can't believe all of these neon-adorned eateries can stay in business with the plethora of options available... Yet, they all seem to thrive.

You may be wondering what the title of this blog is all about... It may sound weird but I felt a sense of pride today as our '98 GMC Jimmy made the LONG drive from Missouri to Texas. I was thinking about it along the route today: Everywhere you look there is cowboy memorabilia. There are towns in Oklahoma where there are statues of buffalo in front of every establishment from KFC to O'Reilly's Auto Parts. Most things seem to honor the past and traditions of the wild west. The Jimmy is indeed our noble steed and brought us here safely. There is a lot of road left to travel and I may be singing a different tune at a later date, but today, it's a pretty great feeling to be lying in a bed in Dallas and blogging.

We are preparing for our first two shows this weekend. Friday at The Scottish Rite Hospital for Children and Saturday at Love and War restaurant for the "Hands Down" group (a support group for families who have children with limb-differences). I am very excited for both days and I'm anxious to meet some great new people and see some great places.

Spring Tour 2011 Begins!!!!

Aaaaand we're off!!! Well almost. I just wanted to write quick as we are about to embark on one of the biggest journeys we've ever been on. Lesleigh and I have spent MONTHS preparing to tour over the next few weeks. We're leaving tonight bound for St. Louis where we will spend the night in preparation of a large drive tomorrow from St. Louis, MO to Dallas, TX.

We're very excited and have had a renewed momentum in our lives. This tour will mark our 4th official tour!!! It is also the longest at just under 5 weeks in length.

The '98 GMC Jimmy is packed and Milwaukee will soon be behind us. We were grateful to have had a string of awesome Milwaukee and WI statewide shows over the past few weeks. All capped off by our interview and performance this morning on NBC's The Morning Blend.

Yesterday, the band and I had our first music video shoot!

The song will be "Lord Knows We've Got Time" from the new record "Here We Go". :) So far so good! There's still more to shoot, but day 1 was spectacular! We really lucked out with weather and had an awesome time!

New York to Philadelphia to New York

I'm writing today from the Philadelphia international airport. I'm waiting for Lesleigh's flight to arrive as she's rejoining me today after having to work the last four days. I'm SO excited to see her. She should be arriving in the next few minutes (her flight was delayed a bit because of rainy weather).

There's much to catch you up on. Lesleigh and I had a great day in NYC. We walked extensively and explored much of the lower east side and into Greenwich Village. We ate dinner at a place called Cozy's diner. Lesleigh and I both agreed it was some of the best food we had eaten while on tour. I think it was the best Reuben sandwich I've ever had!

Later that evening we played a show at a bar called Banjo Jim's. The night started a little quietly, but by the end of our set, the place was full and people were into our set. We ended up selling a bunch of albums and making some new friends. Also, Lesleigh and I both had old friends come to hear us play. It was a really great evening.

We've been staying in a lot of cheap hotels lately and actually earned a free stay outside of NYC, in New Jersey, that night. Sweet deal!

The next morning I had to drive Lesleigh to LaGuardia airport (a difficult drive through construction zones and United Nations traffic). We ate lunch together and then she flew home. It was a real drag... The big thing that kept me excited was that I was going to visit my sister and brother-in-law, and our feline nephew Phil.

I had an awesome four days with them. We hung out in and around Philadelphia. I played at an awesome open mic at a coffee shop called Burlap and Bean on Thursday night. It was so fun to hit another great East coast music venue. I explored Valley Forge for about 7 hours on Friday, and in the evening, went out for food and drinks in beautiful West Chester, PA. On Saturday, we WALKED all around Philadelphia and I truly enjoyed seeing the city by foot. You miss a lot of the character driving through. I visited the famous art museum steps from the movie "Rocky", enjoyed a delicious cheese steak in Reading Terminal Market (a huge indoor market place in Philly famous for awesome cuisine, beer, and shopping). We explored the old part of the city, and I'd have to say that one of the coolest parts of my job is that I've been to independence Hall and the historic old city section of Philadelphia three times this year!!! I really don't take that for granted. It was such an awesome day. We went to City Tavern and Mac's Tavern and sampled some local brews. Then we enjoyed a nighttime walk along the water and a mostly full moon rose over the Ben Franklin Bridge... It was quite a site. We capped the night off with a walk down South Street. We took the train back to West Chester, but not without at stop at The Flying Pig Tavern. ;)

Tonight, Lesleigh and I are making our way to New Jersey and to watch the Packers on Monday Night Football! Our friend AJ is hosting us for the night, and we are excited to see him.

Back to NYC tomorrow for the last official day of the tour. Then, who knows. Maybe a little more exploring, as long as we're out here. :)

Vermont to Maine and a win in Boston!

We had a really interesting and somewhat unplanned stop in Vermont. We had decided that we didn't want to drive all the way to Maine from Michigan without stopping, so we firmed up a plan to stop in Brattleboro, VT. We explored the town a bit and went for a drive outside of town. Rustic roads, cows grazing, and TREES just starting to change colors were not in short supply. It's really a gorgeous area. I also found that things just seemed to be a little more relaxed. The hustle and bustle of the east coast seems to skip over this quintessential quiet town. The highlight of our time there was the open mic at Adagio (a restaurant in Brattleboro). Thanks to the internet, we were able to find an open mic to play downtown. We had a blast and were REALLY well received. A number of people picked up our new album and we "jammed" with local talent all night long. Really fun night.

The next day we drove to Maine. We took a stunningly beautiful route through New Hampshire. It was much like a calendar or postcard or something. Hills peppered with boulders, and mountain streams, and beautiful towns, and trees made up a majority of the scenery. In my travels, I've never experienced anything quite like it. I'd definitely recommend seeing it.

It was only a 3 hour drive to Maine (short compared to our 12 hour drive two days before) so when we arrived, we had time to explore. We hung out at Old Orchard Beach and walked along the sand and in the chilly Atlantic waters. We caught an early lobster dinner at "The Lobster Claw" (a tremendous/authentic lobster dining experience) and our show went pretty well, too. :) We played at a local sandwich shop called "Vic and Whit's" and were happy to be back. At night we went out in Portland, ME and had a beer and some cheese and crab stuffed mushrooms and local brews.

I think the only reason we were ok with leaving Maine is that we knew Boston was our next stop. We have come to really love this city. It's been good to us in our 3 visits this past year. Last night Lesleigh and I competed in the "Lizard Lounge Open Mic Finalists Challenge." Every week there is an open mic at an awesome listening room in Cambridge, MA. The "winners" from each of those evenings go on to a final competition that takes place twice a year. I am REALLY excited to report that we won the finalists challenge last night!!! We competed against 22 other AMAZING performers and feel very lucky to have done as well as we did. Thank you to the crowd, the judges, the performers, Tom, and the Lizard Lounge for such a great night!

Another really fun aspect of our weekend is that we were able to see some of our friends who live out here. We had friends travel to see us from Connecticut and were able to hang out last night and get brunch this morning. The last 24 hours have been a major highlight of our tour :)

Driving, Driving, Driving... Driving

Today, in case you weren't sure, we drove. I should say "we are driving." We've been on the road since 9am and it's about 10pm local time! All is well. The car is running and Lesleigh and I are getting along swimmingly (knock on wood on all accounts... Just kidding about Les and I.... But definitely knock on wood for the car).

We had a gorgeous drive today. Temps in the 60's, sun and blue skies. We'll be arriving in Brattleboro, VT shortly. Lesleigh and I are both thrilled to be stopping here. We found a GREAT hotel deal and we're excited to do some exploring tomorrow.

Also, I'd like to keep you up to date on the "soundtrack of our trip." Music is always a huge part of my life and I like sharing what I enjoy with others. Ludington, MI

Home of the badger car ferry and WMOM radio, Ludington was a great first stop on my tour. We had a relatively short drive today from Michigan City, Indiana (about 3 hours) and pulled into town around 3pm. We spent about an hour exploring the beautiful east coast of Lake Michigan. We walked along the breakwall to the lighthouse and enjoyed the view of MASSIVE sand dunes up the coast.

Our exploration time was brief, as we had driven there for an exciting event, a radio interview on WMOM. I must thank you, because the station had an ALL TIME RECORD number of people who streamed my live interview!!! THANK YOU for tuning in. The station owner and DJ's were really pleased and I consider that to be a great thing. You guys rock! I sang and played on the radio, was interviewed, and they played a couple of tracks from "Here We Go" (my new album). Thank you also to Patrick and WMOM we had a blast, in the studio, today.

Our show this evening was at a place called Redolencia Coffeehouse in downtown Ludington. It had a very cozy vibe and a welcoming staff. We had an intimate and attentive crowd and everyone that came bought a copy of "Here We Go."

Now we're on the road. We're staying in a town called Belleville, MI and tomorrow we're making a pretty big drive bound for Vermont. I've never been there before, and I'm really excited!

Here We Go

"Here we go... No matter what, I'm comin!"

This is the main theme of the title track of my new album, "Here We Go." It accurately describes the way I'm feeling today...

Lesleigh and I have been scrambling around trying to check every item off of our PAGES of to-do lists for the past few weeks (a feeling I am sure everyone who's ever traveled can relate to) - My new album has been released (limited release, available only on tour right now), I've been working, booking, gigging, cleaning, shopping, banking, packing, and cooking! It sometimes feels like a lot to take on all at once...

And then... Lesleigh and I packed our car, pulled out of the driveway with diet Mountain Dew in hand and our GPS set for our first stop Michigan City, Indiana, and some newly purchased music (as a sort of soundtrack for our tour) in the CD player, and suddenly all of the stress I'd been feeling faded to solely excitement. Don't get me wrong, I'm always excited to travel; it's just easy to get distracted when you quite literally feel like you're running around like a total maniac! But, like I said, "Here we go."

We drove through Chicago, which is always a site to behold. At 11 o'clock at night, the skyscrapers were all lit like business was just beginning. I like driving through Chicago at 11o'clock at night. The traffic is much more favorable :)

Our destination was Michigan City, Indiana, which is where I'm writing from now. We stayed in a pretty comfortable Comfort Inn (as its name would suggest) and are getting ready to head to Ludington, MI for our radio interview (you can stream it live from www.wmom.fm at 5pm/4central) and a show at Redolencia coffeehouse, in town. If you don't already know, my song "Michigan Is Getting Closer" was the number 1 most requested song at WMOM in the last week of July!

I will definitely write more later to let you know how our day goes...

Here we go, the tour is underway. I'm back on the road and I can't wait to share my experiences with you! Thanks for reading.

June 2010 has been quite a month for me. In some ways a month to remember and in some ways a month to forget. Some months are like that... I am hoping to bring you up to speed a bit on whats been going on.

Behind the scenes there's been a frenzy of activity and I'm sorry I haven't corresponded much. I've been working really extensively on getting the mixes for my new album just right. It's amazing what you can do with computers and technology that you could not have done or would have been far more difficult to do even a few years ago. I've been working with Nate Edwards, our engineer, exchanging mixes and notes via email as he and I live in different states! I'm tremendously excited to get some mixes out to you guys.

The band and I are gearing up for our first ever appearance at Summerfest (a large Milwaukee-based music festival). Check the show calendar for details on that show and others. Come see us on June 24th, 6PM, at the Refugee Stage :) It's going to be really fun.

Lesleigh and I took a little vacation time last week and traveled to California. I've been really sick since our return (fever, blowing my nose a lot etc.) so I havent been online much, but I hope to blog a little about our experiences driving from San Diego to Los Angeles to San Francisco. We live in a beautiful country!

And, personally there has been a great deal of chaos lately. The trip to California was really therapeutic but I'll be "playing catch-up" for a while.

A Sign (5/4/10)

As I've mentioned in my previous updates, this past weekend the band and I went into the studio to record what will be my 3rd full-length album. I had said that I would try to keep you up to date and informed on all that was going on, unfortunately, we were so pressed for time that I barely looked at my phone (the device I use to blog when I’m on the road) all weekend.

I thought I’d bring you up to speed on the events that transpired this weekend, now. I am VERY excited and proud to announce that recording was indeed a success and that we have 10 great tracks to be released sometime later this year!!! I am so excited to share this material with you all. Seriously, it’s special stuff.

That being said, this experience in the studio turned out to be a real challenge for us. We encountered some tech issues right off the bat and had to overcome several other obstacles over the course of our three days. With the strenuous schedule, cramped quarters, and long days in the studio (40+ in 3 days) definite challenges arise.

Again, that being said, when I sang the last notes into the microphone with every ounce of catharsis I had on Sunday evening; Sweaty, tired, and bleeding ( I cut my little arm open while playing my guitar on the first day) I felt incredible relief and gratitude to Brian-for his time, to my wife (Lesleigh), and to Nate (our engineer) for sticking with me through the rough patches of the weekend to create something we believe is truly great.

I had tears in my eyes when I finished singing. I know a lot of fellow musicians, entrepreneurs, artists, and creative people of all kinds, read this blog, so you can imagine what it is like to pour so many hours into your craft and to finally see it coming to life after what seems like every hardship imaginable! It’s powerful stuff.

I titled this blog “A Sign” because of a unique experience we had on our drive home. Lesleigh, Nate, and I carpooled to the studio. We decided that since we had an hour and a half to drive home we’d listen to the rough mix of the record in it’s entirety toward the end of the trip (to give our ears and minds a small break). As soon as we put the record on, we noticed the end of a rainbow in the distance. Honestly, it was seriously the largest brightest rainbow I’d ever seen.

As the first song of the album roared to life, the clouds revealed the rest of that BEAUTIFUL RAINBOW, in its’ entirety. In my life, I’ve never seen anything like it. It was so close and large you couldn’t see the whole thing unless you craned your neck to catch the whole view through the car windows. I kid you not, when the song stopped, the rainbow disappeared back into the clouds. I have goosebumps just writing about it.

A sign? I definitely believe so.

RECORDING A NEW ALBUM

I announced a few blogs ago that the band and I are hitting the studio again to record what will be my 3rd Full-Length album! Brian (drums), Lesleigh (keyboards and vocals), and I (guitar, vocals, etc.) are returning to Ark Studios in Menasha, WI - The same studio where we recorded "Potter Road", last year. We'll also be working with Nathan Edwards as our engineer, again.

While some things will be similar to the past, we will be doing A LOT of new and exciting things with this record. We'll be having a few new guests join us in the studio and... a whole lot more. I don't want to give away all of the album's intricacies and secrets; I simply hope to inform you that it's coming and that you should be excited.

I've been really fortunate to have a fan base that has supported me through the last two years (It's been a little over two years since the release of my debut album "The Tale of an Underdog"). There's a lot of blood, sweat, and tears invested in the album to come (literally there has been blood, sweat and tears, in regards to this new record (haha)).

I'm going to do my best to keep you posted on how the recording process is going. Keep us in your thoughts and prayers this weekend, as we'll all be doing a lot of traveling and all trying to use our gifts and talents to bring you what we believe is some truly special music!

Boston to New York to Philadelphia

The last few days have been a total whirlwind. Monday, Lesleigh and I had the afternoon to explore so we walked around the downtown area in Boston and enjoyed a pint in the bar that inspired the TV series "Cheers."

From there we explored the hospital grounds at Massachusetts General Hospital (In case you don't know, I'm traveling with a nurse) :) and walked around the surrounding neighborhoods taking in the culture and enjoying a beautiful spring day.

Monday night was the Lizard Lounge Songwriter Open Mic Competition. It was so much fun. Lesleigh and I met some new friends and played together for the open mic. There were 30 performers and 3 go on to a final round.... I am honored to announce that Lesleigh and I took home 1st place for the evening!!!! So, we will hopefully repeat this trip in the future to try our hand again at the Finalist Competition. Again, the performers were so great. We enjoyed listening all night long.

So, Tuesday morning we hit the road and drove to New York City for a brief visit. We found an awesome deal on a hotel just 1/2 block from Central Park on the west side. We could see the park from our window, not that we stayed there long, because we hit the town HARD. We walked across the park to look at another hospital (again, with a nurse) and then we took a cab to Times Square, then we walked to Rockafeller Plaza, then to The Empire State Building (including the 86th floor observation deck). It was a beautiful day, so we could see the entire city and miles around it. From there we further explored the mid/downtown areas before returning to Times Square for dinner. After dinner we explored more of midtown and the theater district, returned to Rockafeller Plaza (I'm not sure I'm spelling Rockafeller properly, bear with me, if I'm not. I sm writing this in our car :). ) then we walked down 5th avenue, up to the Met Opera House, and back to 71 st street where we stayed!!! All in all we walked for like 10 hours with a break for dinner. That's what you have to do when you only have a limited time in a city as grand as New York.

Wednesday morning we explored around Central Park including Strawberry Fields and the Dakota Building (where John Lennon was killed) it was an eerie but necessary stop for me. I'm a huge fan and that event in history is a scar that I feel and I wasn't even born when it happened.

Sadly, we had to depart and check out of our hotel. BUT our spirits were lifted at our next stop, Philadelphia! We visited Independence Hall and had an awesome tour guide. She really made the history come to life. I was there 6 months ago and politely, I'd have to say, my guide then was rather lackluster. From there we visited the Liberty Bell, but had to rush through having entered 5 minutes before closing time.

We enjoyed some cheese steaks AND an AMAZING beer at City Tavern (a likeness of the olde tavern that the continental congress men met to discuss politics etc.). It was a Thomas Jefferson Ale, which is made from one of his actual recipes and is only served there. It blew my mind. If you like beer, and are of age, check it out if you visit philadelphia soon.

My sister and brother in law moved to Pennsylvania in February and so we stopped and visited them and there new kitten Phillip William last night. We had an awesome dinner and just enjoyed each others company. It was a very good visit.

Now, we are on the road, midway through Pennsylvania (which is beautiful country, by the way).

Open Mic Showdown and Free Day

There are so many talented people in this world!

As you know, last night was the Lizard Lounge Singer Songwriter Final Showdown. The show had 32 performers and lasted 6 hours!!! The beauty of it is that the crowd was totally awesome and listened intently to each performer. It was a full house and the room was packed and filled with an awesome energy.

I was fortunate to clinch a first round bye and played in the "sweet 16." It was a really proud moment for me to take the stage in that room. I played my heart out and nailed my song and was REALLY well received (I hope to put up a video and live recording on www.tonymemmel.com in the coming weeks). There was a split amongst the judges and the act that moved on made it all the way to the final 4! No problem though. It is an honor to be invited and to see the friends I met over the fall and to experience, what seems to me, is an unparalelled music scene and community of performers.

The gentleman that ended up taking home the grand prize was phenomenal! His name is Dietrich Strause and he is a fabulous musician. What seemed to clinch it for him, in my opinion, was a sort of "secret weapon" in his final song. The majority of the crowd was not aware, but he had arranged for certain crowd members to join him in a haunting choral arrangement during the refrain of his song. Lesleigh and I both looked at each other and agreed we both had goosebumps! At first you couldn't tell If it was a recording or what! It was "in surround sound" and it was very moving. Well deserved indeed.

Lesleigh and I got back to our room after 3am and we got an early start on the day today to see my family that had attended the show. It was really great to see them and so awesome to all be in the same room together.

Today, Lesleigh and I explored some historical sites. We first visited Christ Church where the "one if by land two if by sea" lanterns were lit that signaled Paul Revere and other riders that the British were coming. Very cool... So much history at every turn. We then walked and walked and walked, just exploring each nook and cranny of the city. It was nice, since it's Sunday we found some free parking and could walk far without needing to return to feed the meter.

We also visited the Charlestown naval yard and toured a world war 2 era ship. It served in the south pacific and was actually hit by a kamikaze plane during battle but survived. It was so cool to walk through the ship. Right up my alley. The ship we couldn't board was the USS constitution, but we did see it. Very cool experience. One of the oldest, if not the oldest, of its kind.

For lunch we ate cheeseburgers and had a couple of beers at Joes Cafe, right on the waterfront and facing the skyscrapers of the beautiful city. Lunch was great.

Now, we're getting ready to go see a friend of mine's band play in the city.

Driving

We completed the first chapter of our journey, yesterday. Between the two of us, Lesleigh and I drove for 18 hours straight. (Don't worry, we were both very safe, and exchanged seats enough, and had enough coffee and diet Mountain Dew to keep us on our toes.)

We saw some beautiful scenery, especially in New York State and Massachusetts. I always love it when the roads you're driving on are carved right into rocky hills that border the highway.

It was hilly and gently raining and the leaves are sprouting on the trees and the grass is turning green again.

I feel really familiar with the highways and landscapes having been here 6 months ago, on my tour. It's really fun for me to return with that familiarity and also to experience the spring on the northeast.

Just to reiterate, the reason why we are here; On my tour, this past fall I played one of my shows in Boston at a place called the Lizard Lounge. It was in the form of a competition. 25+ singer-songwriters all play their songs and they're judged. It was a real honor for me to have won the competition, and I've been invited back to compete against other musicians who won on their respective nights in a "final showdown." I am so glad to be here and just honored to be a part of it no matter what happens.

So, we're here safe and sound. We are in luck because there's a brand new Mexican restaurant next door to our hotel (we love Mexican food) :) we intend to explore a bit today before the show, which I'll tell you all about very soon.

HEADED BACK TO BOSTON

Hello Friends and Family

As many of you know, This past fall, I made my way to the East Coast for my first U.S. Tour. One of my most successful stops was in Boston, MA. I won a weekly "Open Mic Competition" at a place called The Lizard Lounge. The open mic consisted of playing 3 of my songs against 25+ other performers and I was very fortunate to share the stage with so many great artists.

I've been invited back to compete again against other musicians who have competed and won in their respective weeks. I'm anxious to make the trip and just honored to have been invited. I'm looking forward to seeing/hearing some more awesome talent!

So, there are 2 opportunities to see me in Boston in the coming weeks!-If you're in the Boston area, the Finalists open mic competition night is on Saturday April 10, at 7pm (See my calendar or The Lizard Lounge's Calendar for more details). If you're in that area it would be really awesome to see you. (I'll also be playing there again on April 12th for the regular weekly competition)!

If you can't make it to Boston this time, keep me in your thoughts (and if you pray) in your prayers. I'm really excited to be heading back to this awesome city and to be a part of what I see is a great opportunity!

I first met Tony Memmel in Spring of 2008 when he was performing his Senior Recital to complete his music major degree at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. The performance of material ranging from show tunes to classical pieces and on was amazing, but what really stood out in my mind was the encore where Tony brought out his guitar and played two selections from his first album: Train Song and A Soldier in London (1943). I knew I had to hear more, and I wanted to see what this artist would do in the future. Since then I've had the pleasure of calling Tony and his wife Lesliegh (who joins The Tony Memmel Band on his second album, which I'll review on a later date) friends, and Tony has recently just completed his first tour. Out of my great respect and admiration for Tony as an artist I decided to write my first music review on Tony's first CD: The Tale of an Underdog.

The best music, in my opinion, that a singer, songwriter, musician can sing, write, or play is music that you can feel. Some of the greatest singer/ songwriters are great because they bear their soul to the audience from Billy Joel to Paul Simon, from John Lennon to Elton John. Tony Memmel is a singer songwriter who truly belongs in a class with these heroes of the form. Writing autobiographically on his debut album, you truly feel every word that he sings, every note that he strums on guitar strikes on the piano or plays on the harmonica.

But truly refreshingly is the fact that he does this without a single hint of pretentiousness and a lack of the depression we see in most music coming out nowadays. A perfect example of this is the song Back to Milwaukee where he sings, "I knew a girl just before her/ She used to lie to me and loved seeing me down/ And I'm never going back to her town," because he tells us right before that, "I met a girl from Milwaukee/ I got to know her the second time around/ And she makes me feel safe and sound." Tony's music is upbeat and optimistic without ever seeming too much so. You could easily see a group of drunk men singing the songs around a jukebox as you could see a kid just enjoying the music in their room.

That brings another great point to his music: it's universal. He doesn't pander to audiences, but plays music that everyone can enjoy and have fun listening to at a party, at a bar, in the car, or people just looking for great music to listen to. You can tell influences from Billy Joel, Paul Simon, Elton John, and so on, but Tony makes the music his own. The music sounds unique and fresh while also sounding dated enough so that everyone who listens to the album feels as though they know, or should know, the songs and be able to join in. Some of the songs feel as though they should be traditional American or Old World songs that have been handed down to us through the years, but at the same time they feel as though they're Tony's own.

One of the things about this album that really gives you that feeling is the bare bones production. Yes, it's a very professional recording, but most of the songs just feature Tony on guitar and vocals. A master move, this is a move that really gives the album a working class man feel. Naturally, this also shines a light on Tony's talent as well, he plays all the instruments on the album; the only exception being the guitar solo on A Soldier in London (1943). This is truly a masterstroke, while probably not intentionally, that shows he's really working for the respect he earns from everyone who listens to his music. And the lyrical quality of his music really shows an intelligence and wit that has been missing from a lot of recent contemporary music.

I highly recommend Tony Memmel's first CD to everyone that I can. This is the consistency of quality that I believe we're all looking for when it comes to the music we listen to, and I believe we really want it from an artist who is really working to gain our respect. I might be a friend of the artist, but this was a truly critical viewpoint of the music from a truly amazing artist. New Orleans Concluded (2/9/10)

Our group had to depart for Milwaukee early Friday afternoon. So, on our final morning we elected to take a tour of the city.

Our guide was a man named Walt. He is an instrumental leader at Camp Restore (where we stayed).

The tour was so incredible. We were able to see buildings that the camp had worked on and photos from before clean up began. It was like some sort of extreme "Extreme Makeover Home Edition" tour. Some of the places that are considered completely finished still have a visible water line.

We saw St. Bernard Parish, where the water rushed in at a frightening speed. We were told the water in that area rose from 0-11ft in 3minutes! People had to climb into their attics to avoid the rushing waters and wait to be rescued. Don't forget that the water took weeks to exit the city. We were shown home video footage of people trapped on their rooftops while the storm is raging around them. It was almost unbelievable. Nothing like we've seen on television.

There are still so many homes that are in need. Someone in our group asked "how many homes still need work?" he told us that the camp has 8,000 homes registered that still need to be worked on. Most are just frames and foundations, many are still roofless. It feels like more than that.

I particularly enjoyed the homes that were built by Brad Pitt's "Make It Right" foundation. The homes are totally green. They are very strange looking but they are completely self sufficient. Residents of these homes dont have any bills because the houses essentially create their own heat and power. They are all on stilts, and the roofs are shaped to resist hurricane winds, some (as I understand it) even have the ability to float, like arks!

Another highlight, was visiting a church that Camp Restore had finished restoring. Some members of our group had even worked on clean up and reconstruction the year before. You could see the water line all the way above the doors (approx 11-12ft). The cool thing, is that when the flood damaged the structure of the church, it revealed necessary support beams that had been nearly destroyed by termites. Had the flood never occurred, the roof would have collapsed from termite damage. I thought that was really interesting. I was glad to have heard that story. The hurricane may have saved lives in this specific case

New Orleans is an incredible city, if you feel at all compelled or called to serve the people of that city, don't think twice. The need is great and it's true, you will get more out of it than you put in. I am anxious to return.

Finally congratulations to the New Orleans Saints. The city really needed that!

A Rare Thing...

A somewhat rare thing happened today, in that our group finished a project that we started at the beginning of the week. Normally, on a trip like this, you work on something and hand off your tools to the next crew to work where you left off. Not in this case! The entire house is near completion. We added a 2nd coat of paint and finished touch ups. It just needs some furniture and appliances.

We were able to meet Mr Vincent's son. He will be the one living in the house when it's finished (he was blinded after being shot in the head during a robbery...) He is alive and well and really excited to get into his house, again. He was joking with us and talking football. Saints fans are SO EXCITED...I've never seen anything like the frenzy in this town. Their home team is helping to restore hope to these folks. It's awesome.

In the morning, we will be going on a bus tour of the city. We're going to visit the downtown area, the 9th ward (the poorest area of New Orleans and most heavily damaged by the storm and still in some of the worst shape), the musicians village, and the homes that Brad Pitt's charity has funded which I hear are extraordinary (they are completely self sustaining and green, and architecturally very unique). I can't wait.

In summation, I do not want to leave. I've enjoyed my time here immensely. I've been told over and over again by the people who organized the trip for us that "you will get more out of helping others than you will give." they were right. I knew that, but I know it for real after getting right into the thick of it and working toward restoring this incredible city. The people are resilient and courageous and their brand of community is something I'd like to see more of.

It seems I get to bed later each night, but I have more energy than ever. Nevertheless, the morning comes fast and i want to be wide awake for the tour. Goodbye for now.

Painting

Today I was on the paint crew. The home belonged to a gentlemen named Mr. Vincent. He was in his 60's and was Forced to evacuate when Katrina hit. His family stayed in the Dallas area and never returned to live in New Orleans, with the exception of his son, Who will live in the house when all is said and done.

His son was held up at gunpoint in a store, was shot in the head, and lived! He lost his vision but is incredibly grateful to be alive. I'm excited to meet him tomorrow as he will likely be at the house.

Mr. Vincent was incredible. He is very well spoken and informed, and knowledgable about the specifics of the flood and the city's history. He volunteered to join our group for dinner in the French quarter, a great seafood place. We had catfish and barbecue shrimp (awesome), and crab claws In a lemon butter sauce. Mr. Vincent bought our entire group appetizers as a thank you and gave us a small tour of the French quarter, including Jackson square, St. Louis Cathedral, and the French Market and Mississippi River. It's an awesome city... It's only been a few days, but I know I love this town.

Tomorrow is our last full day of work. I hope to return to Mr. Vincent's house.

Day 3-Major Clean Up & Evening Concert

6:20am wake up call, breakfast, out to work...

Today we were at a house that experienced a great deal of damage during Hurricane Katrina. (Not far from the Super Dome)

It was the house of Doris Morris and Boris. Doris is what i would call the matriarch of the community. An elderly woman, well known, very grateful. Boris worked side by side with us. He does A LOT of work in the community and is an amazing painter and handy man. He puts a lot of thought and energy into the craft of painting rooms and houses. A true underground talent.

We spent the entire day going through personal belongings. This is not an easy thing to do. Photographs, purses, memories, along with debris, building materials, and more. Very hard work. Our whole crew is exhausted.

It took about 8people to make the progress we did. It was sad and difficult labor but it is rewarding to see the house in much better condition than 8hours before.

Pastor Keen, a well known and respected leader in the community, cooked fried catfish for us for lunch, it was quite a feast. Unbelievabley good. Superior even to the delicious meal I raved about in a restaurant several entries ago.

Back at camp, Pastor Frank, Lesleigh and I put on a somewhat impromptu concert for the workers here. I was so glad to be able to use my musical gifts. I believe it to be one of the best and most inspired performances I've ever done. The workers, my new friends, were incredibly grateful. Music has an awesome way of concluding a hard day with a better finish.

Tomorrow we are going back to the same house. I can't wait to get out there again.

From My Bunk

From My Bunk

Today was our first day of work. I can't wait for tomorrow. Right now, I'm lying on my bunk and reading what workers before me have written on the wooden beams. It is a custom to write your name or a message on your bunk before your departure from the camp. A neat reminder of all those who've come before me.

What a day. We woke up early. Breakfast is served at 7am. Our crew was supposed to paint someone's house today, but long story short, we ended up joining another crew at a "start up" house (one with a lot of work to be done).

Our first job was sweeping debris and removing broken glass from the windows. We saw the water line in the uninhabitable home next to ours that is still without a roof. It was higher than me. The homeowners met us with tears in their eyes, grateful for any assistance we could give. These homes mean a great deal to these people.

We finished the day by doing lots of yardwork. Thick brush, up to my stomach, had to be hacked and raked. I've never felt particularly handy, but I feel like everything I do here is making an impact. There is physical labor to be done, and there is social outreach to be done. We're not only building houses, we're rebuilding a community. An awesome community. I can't wait to get more familiar with the city.

Well, I am a slow typist on my phone, I am going to get some rest.

The city of New Orleans

It seems like a thousand hours ago that I was anticipating seeing the St. Louis arch. It's a really cool site. I want to go back and go inside. It's an awesome site and I really dig the symbolism behind it.

We were supposed to arrive around 9:30 this morning, but due to icy road conditions in the middle of the night, we got in around 12:30pm.

Local homes, buildings, and businesses still show the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. It is much improved, but everywhere you look, there are reminders of the storm. Its quite a site to behold.

We went to Bethlehem Lutheran Church and they welcomed us with hugs, handshakes, and homemade gumbo and clam chowder. We got to hear firsthand the struggles that these people have been going through over the past few years. I'm feeling really motivated to get to work in the morning.

Tonight we had time to explore Bourbon St and the French Quarter. I love New Orleans! Lesleigh and I had a really nice dinner at Bourbon House Seafood: alligator soup, bourbon-glazed shrimp, and catfish. Mmm. We walked around and really got to experience the energy of the city. Imagine a huge celebration on narrow downtown streets, flooded with people, lots of loud music, people dancing, drinking, New Orleans Saints craze... definitely an unforgettable night.

Tonight I'm sleeping in a mens dorm, missing Les, full, exhausted, and excited to start the day tomorrow and get to the real purpose of this trip.

Departure-Destination New Orleans!

It's been a while since my last entry, but I am back on the road and excited to share my thoughts and experiences with you once again.

I am currently on my way to New Orleans, approx 20 miles from St. Louis. I'm sitting next to my wife, Lesleigh, she was able to get away from work to do this with me... As a team. I am really glad she's here. I think we will really learn a lot and grow together. It sounds corny, but I like corny.

It's dark outside and people's reading lights make it difficult to see out the bus windows, but Im anxious to try to catch a glimpse of the "Gateway to the West" anyways.

Tomorrow we'll be arriving in New Orleans. The purpose of this trip is to work on Hurricane Katrina relief. I've never been to the city, but as I understand it, the people are still truly in need. There are still thousands displaced and rotting homes and businesses everywhere.

It was really encouraging to me to see the footage of the city's citizens partying in the streets after the Saints won the NFC Championship game, last Sunday. I can't wait to explore a bit when we are not painting, or drywalling, or insulating or...

On a sidenote, I'm also excited (as a sports fan) because my travels in the last few months have taken me to New York and Philadelphia (both during the World series, Philadelphia Phillies vs. New York Yankees.) AND Indianapolis (Colts) and now New Orleans (Saints) both Super Bowl contenders. All planned without these sporting circumstances in mind. I think that's cool, I feel pretty fortunate.

We'll be arriving in the morning and the Pastor leading the trip asked me if I would play a song on my guitar during tomorrow morning's church service. We'll be guests at a local church. I'm excited to play for people in a sporadic and somewhat unplanned atmosphere. That'll be a nice challenge for me, as I am a person who really likes to prepare.

Well, I must be on the lookout for St. Louis. I don't want to miss my chance to catch a glimpse. I'm really looking forward to getting my hand(s) dirty.

Successful Weekend, Growth, and goal for the next two weeks

We had two awesome shows this past weekend. The band was really rockin. We played at the Eagles Club on Friday night and in Green Bay at a great place called "The Attic" on Saturday. We had great attendance both nights and a lot of new interested friends and fans! It is so cool to watch how this has grown...

A year ago (in November) Brian and I got together to "jam" for the first time. Two Novembers ago, I was still in college... Where will I be next November?

Home, Shows, and Springsteen

I'm back in Milwaukee now, getting back into the swing of being at home. I think Ive written that same phrase more than one time, but it does take a while to get reacquainted with home. I was getting used to living out of my suitcase and it was a thrill to play in and explore new cities everyday.

I had three shows last week. UW Whitewater, Winesteins, and Stumpjack Coffee Co., all of which were fun and successful shows. Brian and I played the UW Whitewater show together which made for a great evening. We received a warm welcome home at our monthly show at Winesteins with a large crowd of friends and family. Stumpjack was a blast, too. Lesleigh and I played the majority of the show as a duet. We met some new friends and played well. It was a really cool night.

On Sunday, Lesleigh took me to see Bruce Springsteen in Milwaukee. Before the show, we went to Major Goolsby's, a sports bar down the block from the venue. We had the most delicious wings and burgers. I can barely describe how delicious they were. If you ever get the opportunity to go there, you should :)

Bruce is one of my absolute favorite artists. He's an inspirational musician and performer. He played for 3 hours without a break and played the entire "Born To Run" album from start to finish!! The concert was my birthday gift from Lesleigh, it was really special to be there with her.

Bruce and his band have a chemistry that I would hope to emulate as a performer and member of a group. They all seem to have a genuine awesome time performing together. Bruce is incredibly charismatic and his songwriting stands alone.I hope to meet him someday.

It was especially cool being at the show having just played in Asbury Park, NJ (his hometown) a few weeks earlier.

I want my shows and the concert to catapult me forward into the coming weeks. I hope they do. Have a good day, be well.

Indianapolis and Home

We made the drive from Columbus to Indianapolis in about 3 hours. Not much construction or traffic, made for a pleasant drive.

When we arrived we explored the area we were in a bit and decided to find a coffee shop to do some catching up with computer work. I had tea and Lesleigh had coffee and we spent a couple of hours taking care of business (yes, like the song).

It was a challenging day. It was hard to think about the finality of the final day of my first tour. It had been so much fun and I had really found a rhythm and pace that was clicking well for me. I wasn't wrapped up or consumed by these troubles, my company that I was with was tuned into this sentiment and helpful with seeing the bigger picture.

When you do something like a tour, no matter what line of work you're in, there is much to be done to maintain new friendships and contacts. And of course, if you love what you do, you can always seek more opportunities to do it. We're already plotting tour #2 and 3 :)!

I am not upset to return home, as I said, but it is a change of pace. The show in Indiana was a lot of fun. We played for a fun group of folks including a family with 2 little boys who were really digging the tunes.

We drove home and took the weekend off (kind of). We saw "Where The Wild Things Are". Have you seen it? We enjoyed it so much. I thought it was so cool. The film had Lesleigh and I talking for quite some time afterward. Layers. :) and yesterday we enjoyed a "chili dump" lunch with my Grandpa and our friends from church. I had two bowls.

Now we're home. Lesleigh's headed to work soon, and I have 3 shows coming up this week and I'm looking forward to seeing some familiar faces from my home town. I don't want to lose any steam, that's my goal for this week. I'll keep you posted on how things are going. Be well.

Iron City and Columbus

After our day in Delaware, we made our way to Pittsburgh Pennsylvania.

The drive was long and beautiful. It took us through the mountains and through the countryside. I was glad that Lesleigh was able to join me for some mountain driving because the views are magnificient and she had returned to Milwaukee during my last trip through the Appalachian Mts. We had some good meaningful conversations. This time on the road has given new depth to our friendship. There's always more to know about people, no matter how well you think you know them already.

Pittsburgh took us both by surprise. We weren't sure what to expect but really enjoyed the city! The architecture, the hilly setting, the food, and the people were all great.

The show was at a place called "Bloomfield Bridge Tavern". I went early because I had been invited to a monthly gathering of songwriters-A local group that gets together and shares their songs with one another and then offers encouragement and critiques. The group was awesome and very welcoming and appreciative of what I had to share.

After that I stuck around for the open mic. By strange happenings, the featured guest was unable to perform so they asked me to fill the slot. I was very happy to be able to play more. The set went well and a lot of folks picked up my new album!

Wednesday we had an off day so we explored the city, ate, had a few local beers and took in the local culture. Later in the evening we made our way back to our residence for the night and watched the World Series.

Tonight I played in Columbus, OH. We played an intimate show at a fair trade coffee shop/store called Global Gallery. The people were great.

Tonight we rest and tomorrow we ride. Indianapolis, our final show of the tour. I am very sad to see this first tour coming to a close, although I could stand to do some laundry. I will sincerely miss the road. I will forever have great memories of my first tour. This is only the beginning. I've discovered new energy in my songs and in myself. I think you'll be hearing a lot more from Tony Memmel :)

I'm getting ahead of myself!!! We're not done yet. Tomorrow is another stop and this is just the beginning.

The Purple Fiddle and Mojo 13

Saturday's stop on the tour was The Purple Fiddle in Thomas, WV. Thomas is a small mountain town, just a few blocks long, but the Purple Fiddle was one of the most well-attended shows I've played on the tour. I opened for A Good-natured Riot, a slammin' bluegrass band from Richmond, VA. I had the opportunity to hang out with them for several hours, and we became great friends over the course of a single evening. They saw that I play harmonica and asked me to jam with them for one of their songs, which is something I've never really done before. It went really well, and it gave me the opportunity to stretch my limits as a musician. What an awesome night. As a performer, I got a free night in the Purple Fiddle's hostel after the show. I hope to make it back there sometime soon.

It rained pretty heavily for most of my drive to Thomas, but when I left the next morning, the sun was shining and I had a beautiful drive through the mountains on the way back to Philadelphia. I was able to catch the Packer game and the beginning of the world series game, but I ended up passing out around 9:00. I guess all the excitement finally caught up with me. Lesleigh called me at midnight after she got off work to let me know that her flight had been bumped up a few hours. :) I picked her up the next morning at the airport in Philadelphia (where a bystander told us we should be in the Guinness Book of World Records for "world's longest hug"), and we hit the road for Delaware.

Our show was at a circus-sideshow-themed bar called Mojo 13. I was slotted to be the open mic featured artist, and also competing for the slot with the Yankees/Phillies game. I wasn't expecting an awesome crowd because the stakes were so high with the game -- Phillies playing at home, facing elimination from the World Series if they lost. Wilmington, DE is just a few miles from Philadelphia. I started my set, and the whole bar cleared out to come listen to me, singing along to my Sublime cover and shouting and hoisting their glasses when I played "Wrong Ain't Right." It was such a fun crowd, and such a great night! I met some awesome people, played in another brand new state, and probably had the loudest sing along crowd I've ever had. And the Phillies won, so spirits remained high for the rest of the night. :)

Now we're driving through the Pennsylvania countryside which is really beautiful. Lesleigh is helping me transcribe this blog so I can keep my eyes on the road. Just a few more hours and we'll be in Pittsburgh. As always, I'll let you know how it goes. Be well.

Barrington, NJ and Philadelphia, PA

Before I went to bed on Thursday night, I decided to do some research on how I could spend my day in Barrington, NJ. I looked through some maps I have and scrolled through my phone when I realized my show was only about 15 minutes from Philadelphia.

Continuing on with the spirit of this tour, I decided to drive into the city and see all that I could before having to return to NJ for my show that evening. I walked all around the historic downtown area. I visited the Liberty Bell:

Then I booked myself a tour at The Pennsylvania State House aka "Independence Hall". The tour was wonderful. They had the rooms all set up like they must have looked 250 years ago. It was so awesome to think of how many amazing individuals have stepped foot inside those rooms and how much history there is in one place.

The tour was free, you just had to make an appointment (in case you want to go). Philadelphia was cool like that, you could walk to a lot of the historic sites and visit them for free.

I also enjoyed an authentic Philly cheesesteak sandwich on South Street. It was very very tasty.

After my time in Philadelphia, I hit the road and made my way to the show.

The Barrington Coffeehouse was an awesome place! I had a great listening crowd and made friends with some of the folks who were in attendance. Great time!

First things first:

ALSO, I found out that I was featured in the Tri City Newspaper here in Asbury Park. A really nice lady gave me a few copies so ill scan the article for you to read when I get home.

THE BRONX- I spent the day yesterday walking around the Bronx. I really enjoyed the neighborhood and I walked all around Yankee Stadium. It was very exciting because yesterday was day 1 of the World Series. Only problem... It rained.... A lot. Luckily I re-re-reused my poncho from Niagara Falls and stayed mostly dry.

The day ended up pretty poorly though. I was double booked at my venue for the night and they ended up giving preference to a famous author who was coming in to talk about his book. Uncool. One Good thing happened though. A guy heard that I was double booked and asked what kind of music I played and bought a cd having never heard me. Thanks again :)

So, I left for Asbury Park and today was Totally redeeming!!!

I spent the afternoon scoping out Bruce Springsteen sites, old stomping grounds, places referenced in lyrics, venues he's played and still frequents. It was a pilgrimage of sorts as I really really enjoy and identify with his music. He really speaks to me.

It was a real thrill to play in his hometown. Apparently he's even used the restroom at the venue I played tonight (don't worry, I didn't photograph the facilities:) I met great people in Asbury Park. Everyone (families and couples included) picked up a copy of my new album tonight. I am honored.

Today really lifted my spirits. I can't wait to play again tomorrow. I'm exhausted. Yet, i am thrilled to be witnessing exciting progress on this tour. I'll be writing again soon. Barrington, NJ tomorrow, I'm hoping for another great day. Thanks for reading!

New York City

Today was kind of a dream come true. I had the first opportunity (hopefully of many) of my life to play in NYC.

I have to admit, I think I was more anxious/nervous about driving in the city than about performing (but not too nervous :)

I ended up driving and playing very well. :) The venue was a place called Banjo Jim's in the East Village. I played for an intimate and awesome listening crowd. They were really great.

To back track a little, earlier today I checked out of my hotel in the Boston area. I was melancholy when it was time to leave but very focused on my show tonight. The drive was about 4 hours.

After I parked the Jimmy, I was able to walk around the city. I grabbed a little pizza (I was starving!).

And then I made my way toward some sites. Unfortunately, it was very rainy and I only had a couple of hours to burn, so it was brief, but very cool. It really is a magical place. I've never been anywhere like NYC...

Tomorrow I'm playing in the Bronx. Yet another first. After that, off to New Jersey. The days are flying by. I can't believe it's been a week that I've been on tour. Tomorrow is another day. I'll be keeping you updated. Have a good night. Be well.

Seeing Boston and The Open Mic Challenge

Today I experienced Boston...

I woke up and talked with Lesleigh on the phone, which was so nice. I checked out of my hotel, and began searching for where the Lizard Lounge (my venue for the evening) was. After I found it, by chance, I got a little turned around and ended up on an on ramp to the freeway...

Thus began my day of exploring Boston. I drove into the downtown area. I saw the Massachusetts State House (The building with the golden roof) (It made me think of the movie "The Departed"), I walked and walked and walked. I saw where the Boston Tea Party was planned. I was bummed I couldnt make it to the harbor. I was low on parking meter time and time in general. I visited Bunker Hill/Breeds Hill, the first major battle of the American Revolution. Many of the neighborhoods were so charming. Lot's of 3-5 story red and brown brick buildings old fashioned lanterns. Very cute ;)

I wanted to beat rush hour traffic, so I left Bunker Hill around 4:30PM so I could again find the venue and some food. I ended up being only a few blocks from Harvard University. I walked all through the campus. I thought I fit in rather nicely in the land of ivy league academia :) ;)

After Harvard, I walked back to the venue which doubled as a terrific and moderately priced restaurant. I had a Sam Adams Oktoberfest and a Reuben sandwich before the show.

THE SHOW- The show was an open mic type night. There were 20+ slots, about 18 of which were booked ahead of time and then a few walk ins and alternates. I had several friends come to see me play it was so great to catch up with them. The room was packed with performers and friends and good cheer. The open mic was a Challenge/Competition with a celebrity judge and lots of talent. I am very proud and honored to tell you that I WON the Open Mic Competition!!! I was so thrilled... Its a good feeling to have people in an entirely different place enjoying your music.

Its almost 2:30AM and I am ecstatic and exhausted. Tomorrow I'm off to Manhattan. I've never played there before. A new adventure awaits. I'll miss Boston a lot. It's been really great... But tomorrow a new adventure begins.

Lobsters in Maine and Exploring Massachusetts

It rained Friday... And Saturday, too.

I was notified by the "Saco Spirit Pumpkin Festival" that the event would be postponed to Sunday. I was really bummed about that because it was something I was really looking forward to. LUCKILY, the absolutely awesome folks in Saco, ME were able to find me a place I could play indoors. I'll get to that in a second...

Remember how I said it was very rainy? Well, Lesleigh and I did not let that squash our ambitions of seeing the town. I wanted to take her to the ocean since it was going to be our last day together this week and her only chance to see the sea on this trip. We didnt have umbrellas or anything, BUT I did save our souvenir ponchos from the "Maid of the Mist" earlier in the week :) they came in handy as we explored by the sea for a bit...

Our venue was a place called "Vic and Whit's" a wonderful and cozy sandwich shop and wine store. (Thank you again Vic and Whit's! AND of course Nadeen and the Saco Spirit staff). It was a very intimate setting and I was able to play unplugged for a bunch of people coming in and out of the store.

The show was a lot of fun. A friend of mine from college, who now attends Yale, made the trip up to Maine to come hear us with her husband and several of their friends. Afterwards We went out to dinner at a place called "The Lobster Claw." "The Lobster Claw" is closing it's doors for the season after today, so everything was marked down in price! Including high quality beer and VERY fresh lobster. Last night WE FEASTED LIKE KINGS.... LIKE LOBSTER EATIN' KINGS (AND QUEENS).

We had SO much fun with our new friends that we returned with them to their hotel in Portland and spent hours socializing, playing Catchphrase, and just hanging out. Lesleigh and I are bummed that they don't live closer or vice versa because the group hit it off really well. Lot's of fun. I guess that is one of the challenges about being on the road. Everything is really fun, and most things end too quickly.

This was certainly true of today when I had to take Lesleigh to the airport so that she could go home to work at the hospital... I had a "rough" beginning to the day. This will be the longest we've been apart since we've been married. The good news is, she's flying back to meet me, in Philadelphia next Monday, to reunite for the final leg of the tour.

I was in pretty sad shape... But the day pressed on and things got a little better, she arrived safely in Milwaukee and we talked on the phone. To improve my day alone, I decided to hit the sites. I visited historic downtown Lexington, MA. The Battle Green where the first shots of the American Revolutionary War were fired. It was incredible. I love history, so it was really a treat. Its an eerie feeling to stand on the battlefield and trying to imagine how the events unfolded. A few times I tried to eavesdrop on what the tour guides were saying to their groups. I returned to the hotel (which is very comfortable and needed after a long day). And then headed out for my show at "The Burren" which was awesome. I played following other great regional acts. The crowd sang along with me and listened so closely. Tonight was a real treat. I felt very welcomed and it was good for me to be out in the city. I enjoyed meeting some new friends and hope to keep in touch with them.

Now, I am exhausted and ready for bed. One more day in Boston and then off to New York City.

I <3 Cornwall on Hudson, NY

Remember how I said one of the secondary reasons I chose to tour the east coast this autumn was to see the famed fall colors?

My stars, today confirmed that line of thought tenfold.

We began the day in Glenmont, NY and proceeded to drive south to our destination, Cornwall on Hudson. I swear, The drive got more beautiful by the minute. I would recommend this area to anyone who likes scenery :)

We spent a good amount of the afternoon in a local coffee shop taking advantage of the free Internet and enjoying some local cuisine. For lunch we had a cup of Red Wine Onion soup with a slice of cheese bread... This soup was so wonderful I could have eaten several bowls. I'm sure my breath was not very pleasant afterwards, but that soup was delicious. We finished lunch and started walking around town when It began raining, so I said to Lesleigh, "Lets drive toward that mountain and see where it takes us."

We took a GORGEOUS ride through the mountains along the Hudson river... I think that every calendar featuring American scenery must stop there for a pic.

To top off a good day, we had an excellent audience at the show tonight at 2 Alices Coffee Lounge. Truly appreciative. A bunch of folks showed up because I was featured in an online newspaper this week.

Cleveland to Niagara Falls to Hudson, NY

It has only been a day and a half since my last entry, but there is much to tell...

-Cleveland - After we checked out of our room, we spent a few hours drinking tea and taking full advantage of the free WI-FI at a local coffee-shop. We made our way toward the heart of the city, in the afternoon. The Barking Spider (Our first Venue) was really cool. The atmosphere was very warm, there were quite a few people who filtered in through the night. Lesleigh was able to join me because the bar had a worn grand piano available to us. It was really exciting to say,

"this is my first stop on my very first tour, and my first time playing a song in Cleveland."

We opened the night for a great Cleveland based bluegrass group. They really wailed and were a lot of fun to talk with.

We departed Cleveland at about 12AM and decided to make the 3 hour drive to Niagara Falls. Our sleeping accommodations were very "modest" last night. My goal was to make up at 9AM and drive and get to the Falls by 10AM. This is the last week of the season that the "Maid of The Mist", the boat that drives its passengers directly into the base of the falls, is in operation... We just made it and I am so glad we did.

I am genuinely impressed with water fall water features in hotel swimming pools and in people's backyards. As cliche as it may sound, Niagara Falls took my breath away. It is so enormous and... mighty. I had a tear in my eye as Lesleigh and I rounded the corner of the path where the falls first came into view. AND THE BOAT RIDE was awesome. It was very... Misty! It blew our hair back (literally and figuratively).

Though I would have preferred to stay there all day, we had a long drive today to Hudson, NY. We just arrived at our hotel accommodations. We ate dinner at a pub across the street that had awesome cheeseburgers and Sam Adams Oktoberfest (really hit the spot).

Tomorrow is my 2nd show of the tour and begins an 8 day stretch of shows. Im excited and hoping things go as well as they did in Cleveland every day. We shall see... Have a pleasant evening :)

My First TOUR: First Stop Cleveland, OH

We made it to our first destination today. No shows tonight, but I thought it would be good to arrive with a little spare time to enjoy town and prepare for tomorrow.

The drive was really nice. The Jimmy (our car) had a formidable performance. We made it here in about 7 hours and 15 minutes. It was beautiful. One reason we decided to head out on tour in the autumn, is because we knew that fall colors would be at a maximum. I can't wait to get a little further east and drive through some hills and mountains. After tomorrow we are in relatively uncharted territory... At least to us. I've never been to many of the places that follow tomorrow.

Tonight, we're staying in an Econo-Lodge. We got a good deal on our room and we're still on the outskirts of town so we were able to save some money. WE ARE NEXT DOOR NEIGHBORS with a phenomenal Mexican restaurant called "El Rodeo". Cheap margaritas and a good deal of food for very little money :)

The next time we write will probably be from New York State. Until then... Stay cool

Final Preparations Before Departure

How do you feel before you take a trip or travel for business?

I have traveled extensively in my life. I have visited some of the U.S. and I studied/lived in Europe for 4 months a few years back. I have been fortunate to experience many different cities, countries and cultures... No matter how traveled I get, I still get very task oriented when it comes down to the wire. I kind of hate forgetting things and feeling disorganized (Even though you might not think that of me if you've seen my messy apartment... I have my own organizational system :) ).

This time out feels a little different to me. While I am very excited for the travel experiences (I LOVE TRAVEL), I am also very conscious of the fact that I'm going to be playing my guitar and singing for people in a lot of these places. I feel responsible to these places to put on a good show. Man, Im excited for that.

Today was REALLY hectic. I have been consistently preparing for this tour for months and yet today, the day before departure on MY FIRST TOUR, I had what felt like a million things to do. I woke up before my alarm today. My Goal was to get an entire laundry list of items accomplished by 5 or 6PM so that I could have some time to "chillax" tonight before the tour. Lesleigh was right there by my side, and we are as ready as we can be tonight. It wasn't easy, but here we are.

Lesleigh and I both have been receiving SO MUCH positive feedback from our friends/fans. We've been getting emails and notes wishing us well and congratulating us on giving this life a chase. I want to say thank you for that. We've been really uplifted and encouraged by all of your kind words.

So, It's 11PM Central Time and I am freaking exhausted and tomorrow we depart for Cleveland, Ohio U.S.A. Next time I write we'll be on the road.

Welcome to my blog!

How's it going? My name is Tony Memmel and I am a singer-songwriter from the state of Wisconsin. I've blogged a bit on my myspace page (www.myspace.com/tonymemmel) but I have never set up an "official" blog until now.

This Tuesday I’m embarking on my first tour of the U.S. I’m going to be seeing a lot of new places and meeting a lot of new people. My wife Lesleigh, who also plays piano and sings backing vocals in my band, will be joining me for the majority of the tour as well. We're very anxious to hit the road together.

THE PURPOSE OF THIS BLOG is to journal about my travels. I’ll be writing about interesting things I see, things I think about, my own incites and questions, and of course-music. I intend to continue the blog after the tour as well!

THE TITLE of this Blog:
I entitled my first album “The Tale of an Underdog.” I was at a point in my life where I was just a few months away from graduating from college and was new on the music scene as a solo-singer-songwriter… I was an Underdog. Another thought that contributed to the Title of that album is that I was born missing my left forearm, and I’ve always had a lot of adversity to overcome. It’s not something that is constantly present in my mind, but it is something that has been a large influence in my life. The fact that "Blog" and "Underdog" rhyme is a bonus and I capitalized on that. This is how "Blog of the Underdog" came to be.
